It’s one of my favorite days of the year. No, seriously. The day—the fifth of February (not to be confused with the fifth of November, also one of my favorite days; also not to be confused with Superbowl Sunday)—is special to me, and to those who edit for REUTS. One year ago, I dubbed February 5th Thank an Editor Day, because so often the editors of our community aren’t acknowledged as they should be. It was also a day when REUTS made a promise to you, the readers, and our wonderful editors: Every book published from here on out will feature an “Edited by_____” spot in the copyright page. Cover artists, photographers, musicians and interior formatters are thanked—why not editors?

To continue spreading the love and gratitude, we want to shout from the social media mountain tops how thankful!

giphy5

So, please join us in five days (February 5th, 2017!) in thanking the editor who championed your book. The editor who saw the jumbled pieces, and stitched them whole. The editor who may know your story even better than you know yourself. Thank them, and all the hard work they’ve done for this community and the publishing industry as a whole. Use the hashtag #ThankAnEditor to do so, or overlay one of the images below on your book cover and tag your editor! Or both!

thankaneditor-overlay1 thankaneditor-overlay2(Right-click + save the image, or drag it onto your desktop to use.)

Here are some examples of how the overlay will look over a book cover:

Remember: #ThankAnEditor day is

Sunday, February 5th, 2017!

And, as always, here at REUTS, we’re absolutely thankful for all the editors on our team ::hugs::

You know what I think may help? A nice refreshing walk in the park. All that cool, crisp, air. Not everyone is able to flee to the woods however, so let’s bring some sunlight to where we are with a photo challenge.

If you’ve never done one before, I’ll explain. Each day you take a photo based on the prompt. Let’s start tomorrow (Feb 1st) with nature. Heading to the park for pokeballs and a pretty snap shot sounds nice, but maybe I end up stuck at home so instead just take a photo of a cover with trees. On Feb 2nd, maybe I feel like posing with my newest YA favorite. The prompts are simply suggestions to get you going. Work it any way that brings a smile to your face.

Photo challenges are most popular on Instagram, but I’ll be watching for your #REUTS posts there as well as on twitter, and tumblr. Please feel free to re-post the graphic above anywhere that is handy to you!

Marketing Monday

Last week was Bi Week. It’s a time to raise bisexual awareness and impulsively buy books with bi protagonist. (That bit was just me? Worth it!) Anyways, if you were on twitter you might have seen some recent book events and they got me thinking.

When we write a book the goal is to finish the book. It’s a very in the moment feeling. Once we’ve done that we are told to write something else as we wait for news about the first’s fate. Again, a very in the present activity.

If that book in question get’s a publishing deal, then the whole process shifts to be about the future. About the TBD date, about the release date. Because isn’t publication day the day all your dreams come true?

When I finished posting chapters of Bone Diggers and my Friday was no longer Wattpad Friday, I literally cried. I was so sad it was over. I love that novel and I didn’t want the project to end, even though I knew the story did. And here’s the first point I’m getting at.

I think it’s a misunderstanding of the internet, and maybe even the world, to think it’s a straight progression of linear understanding. Because it’s not. It’s more like a spiderweb. Something posted in March can raise a controversy in September. It’s not that everyone planned and waited for Fall. It’s simply a fact of life that the majority of people will not know things the second they are done.

To visualize this let’s use real data from tumblr.

Purple is the original poster and orange is one of my blogs, blue is anyone else who reblogged. Notice how there is nothing linear about this? Notice the complete lack of designated handoff? I can show you an endless amount of digital spiderwebs to prove this is how information is spread.

That wasn’t my only reminder that data travels this way from last week. My friend retweeted a lovely cover that was in the #BiVisibilityDay tag. The author was posting international cover variants of an already published book. In the mood to buy, I went straight to Amazon and soon realized the book was from 1987.

The first time I knew this nearly 30-year-old book existed was on that day. Not because I personally found the author tweeting, but because someone else did and indirectly showed me.

The marketing moral here?

Books are forever.

If you want your book to sell, to find new audiences over the years, you’ll never be completely done with it. And today might feel lackluster, but your story will be with you forever if you want it to be.

If success is the goal, you’ll never have to say goodbye to your story after all.

PRW-teaser

Usually around this time of year the team at REUTS would be hard at work promoting the 3rd annual Project REUTSway short story competition. So why have we been tight-lipped and silent about it, especially with November just around the corner? While we are hard at work, we have been intentionally keeping things under-wraps. When PRW started back in 2013, it began as a collaborative effort to beat NaNoWriMo and, as a team, write enough short stories to hit the 50k word goal. Well, in that first year, we well fabulously surpassed our goal, nearly doubling what it took to win Nano. The same happened year two, and at that point Project REUTSway took on a life of it’s own.

Becoming it’s own entity, we realized the runway couldn’t handle two competitions, and hosting PRW at the same time as NaNoWriMo put a strain it put on authors who wanted to participate both. Thus, we have decided to officially change the season of PRW, and you can expect to hear more about it in 2016. We’re planning on an early Spring month, and we can’t wait to unveil what other changes we have up our sleeves. Everyone loves a good make-over, right? 😉

As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask, either in the comments below, on Facebook, or our @ProjectREUTSway Twitter account.

Stay tuned! It’s going to be an exciting new line for the PRW fashion show.

Dracian Legacy blog badgeATTENTION, EVERYONE: REUTS Publications is proud to announce the upcoming release of debut REUTS author Priya Kanaparti‘s first title in the Dracian Series, DRACIAN LEGACY.

Here are some things you should know about Priya:

Priya lives in the beautiful city of Boise, ID as a full-time working mom and part-time YA Novel Author. For the past 7+ years she has worked in multiple fortune 500 companies and has recently found the passion to read and write.  The Dracian Legacy is her first YA paranormal romance series. She strongly believes that true love conquers all and that’s a common theme you’ll find within her novels.

Here’s what you need to know about this AMAZING book:

At seventeen, REN PERNELL knows the meaning of tragedy.

But then, a year after losing her parents, AXEL KNIGHT walks through the door and changes everything. Strange creatures start to appear, her best friend suddenly finds her irresistible, and an undeniable, unexplainable bond with Axel threatens to drive her insane. She knows he’s the key. There’s something he’s not sharing, and she’s determined to find out.

Demanding answers, she finally learns the truth: everything she ever believed is an illusion. Caught in a centuries-old blood feud between races she never knew existed, Ren discovers her true destiny. She’s the chosen one, the Echo, preordained to end the bloodshed.

There’s just one catch–in order to save those she loves and a homeland she’s never seen, she’ll have to die.

With the clock running out, she’ll have to navigate a new world of betrayal, lies and deceit. If she can forgive, finding love even in the darkest places, she just might be able to escape the prophecy. But how much is she willing to sacrifice for a cause she didn’t know she was part of? And what will it take for her to be free?

Think THIS.
NOT this.
NOT this.

I feel like I’ve had this conversation with my PR/marketing clients (and myself) at least a million times:

Me: “You need a new author photo.”

Author: “Why? The one I’ve been using is a perfectly good photo of me.”

Me: “Yes, it’s a great photo of you. But it’s a posed shot taken at a conference.” Or, “But it’s more than five years old.” Or, “But it’s pixelated, and/or has TERRIBLE resolution.” Or, “But the lighting is god-awful.” Or, “But it’s a super awkward size, has awkward framing, or can’t be cropped without losing some serious quality.”

(Note: the Subtext of All My Specific Reasons: It is a NICE picture of you. But it is not an AUTHOR photo.)

Me: “An author photo is not a picture. It is a BRAND ICON. It’s your version of the McDonalds golden arches, or the Pepsi red and blue beach ball. Or the Nike swoosh. It’s how your readers/followers/fans and the world in general connects all of your social media personalities and online properties. It’s an instant recognition generator. With a single look, it not only introduces you to the world, but it exemplifies what you stand for and what you have to offer. It’s the KEYSTONE of your online persona.”

All Authors in the World, (at least in my experience): “But…But I HATE having my picture taken!”

Me: “Yes. I know. We all do. But that’s why we have to suck it up and do it anyway, as many times as it takes to get that one ICONIC image.”

Author: “But having professional photos taken costs a lot of money.” Or, “I always feel so uncomfortable working with professional photographers. I feel like I’m being judged.” Or, “Why can’t I just use a picture I already have, from that day when my hair was looking REALLY good, and spruce it up on Photoshop or something?”

Me: “Because THIS IS YOUR BRAND. YOU CANNOT HALF-A$$ YOUR BRAND.”

"Your author photo IS your brand."“Your author photo IS your brand.”

Don’t panic, because there’s a REALLY GREAT ENDING to this conversation, and I’m going to share it with you now. Are you ready? Here it goes.

1. No one said you had to PAY anyone to take your author photo. You can take it yourself with a digital camera and timer. You can ask your husband/friend/family member to take it. You can take it yourself with an iPhone (although, this will only work for lower res photos such as profile pics, etc.). With today’s technology, it is EASIER than ever to take a professional looking photo.

2. There really aren’t any ironclad rules about how an author photo should be staged or formatted. As long as it’s high resolution / high quality (and I’ll go into that in more detail in a minute), the lighting is good (again, see below), it vaguely resembles what you look like in real life (no 1990s Glamour Shots, please), and it effectively represents your BRAND as an author, you can pretty much go with whatever works the best for you!

3. It’s SO MUCH EASIER to TAKE a great picture, than it is to MAKE a great picture. Would you take a Harry Potter book and try to revise it into an erotica book? NO. (Not to say there wouldn’t be a market for that. But if you DID want to do this, it would be 100x better to start with the concept of a HP erotica book and work from there. Tweaking things to be something they’re not is INCREDIBLY AWKWARD.) This is why you DO NOT Photoshop. You do NOT crop your sister in law out of your wedding photos and just use that one. The more clean/professional/”expensive” your photo (and the rest of your web presence, by the way) looks, the more likely people are to assume your product (i.e. your books) will match. And BELIEVE ME, people can tell if you’re using something for a purpose other than what it was originally intended for. (Are you still slightly horrified by my Harry Potter erotica example? Because I am.)

"Ooh, a photo of a CAMERA??! How META."“Ooh, a photo of a CAMERA??! How META.”

With those VIP points in mind, here are some tips on how to create the best possible DIY Author Photo:

(Note: most of these tips come from my personal experience as a broadcast reporter and film producer, and if they can work for me, they can work for YOU.)

Staging: Find a quiet place with good lighting (or create one, as mentioned below). The background should be SOLID, but not white. Muted colors are best. If you can hang a black or dark-colored sheet behind you on the wall (minus the cat hair, of course), even better. Also, for optimum ease and comfort of photo taking, you should be SITTING. DO NOT show the chair or any furniture in your photo. Also, no picture frames, wall sconces or light switches.

Styling: Your hairstyle and clothing should be chosen with a “head and shoulders” perspective in mind. Solid colors are best, since prints will distract from your face. Your FACE should be the central focus of this photo. Wear more makeup than you normally do, because 50% of makeup is invisible to the camera. Eye shadow and blush are ESSENTIAL for women. If you’re a man, you might want to flirt with some mascara or a light touch of skin-tone base powder. Put your hands in the photo if you must. Don’t go too crazy with the accessories. Remember, the focus is YOU.

Quality: Use the nicest digital camera you can get your hands on. Borrow if necessary. Once you’ve got your staging set up, take as MANY photos as you possibly can. Switch up your position (very subtle like) and/or your facial expression every 5-10 photos. Take breaks in between to look at your photos objectively, and see what works. Hate everything? DON’T LET YOURSELF GET FRUSTRATED. Just take a breath and try something new.

Lighting: The importance of lighting in photography CANNOT be stressed enough. If the lighting is good, you’ll appear up to ten years younger and your eyes will seem to glow with an intelligent, almost ethereal light. If your lighting is bad, you’ll have dark circles, thinning hair and several additional chins. IT’S IMPORTANT. Your lighting should be bright enough to banish the shadows from your face, without being bright enough to “wash you out” (that’s where your face is so pale that your features begin to disappear). Sit directly facing a window on a cloudy day, or find a desk lamp with a soft, white bulb. Make sure the light is coming from directly in front of you, or directly in front and slightly above. NEVER from directly above or below, or to either side. That creates nasty shadows. Look at the photos as you go to check for any unsightly shadows or frizzy stray hairs being captured by the camera. Also VIP: try to “find the light” with your eyes, without looking directly AT it. That’s how you’re going to achieve that awesome inner-eye glow.

Insider Tips: Try putting a mirror behind the camera, and looking at it as you pose. Just make sure to flick your eyes to the camera lens when the pictures are actually being taken. If you’re not a person who usually wears makeup, stick to neutral colors (eggshell, pink, beige, light brown) but PILE it on. Use shimmer powder (VERY sparingly) to highlight the inner corners of your eyes, and use bronzer to “burn out” the outer edges of your face (top of your forehead)–which brings the focus back to your EYES, where it belongs. You can also swish a little bit of bronzer underneath your chin to create a slightly stronger jaw line. Just make sure to BLEND your makeup, and check the photos to ensure that your neck doesn’t look like a totally different color than the rest of your face.

Quantity leads to Quality: Like I mentioned before, the more pictures you take while you’re made up and staged, the better chance you’ll have of finding even ONE photo that makes you happy. If you’re having a volunteer take the photos, don’t feel bad about asking them to rapid fire and take about a hundred. Or stop them if you see something that’s not working. If they’re willing to help you do this, chances are they’re willing to help you do it RIGHT. Bribe them with cake, if necessary. Cake usually works. And OF COURSE, if you are lucky enough to have an amateur photographer friend or a pro who’s willing to take these pictures for you for free, DO NOT FORGET to thank them profusely and give credit to the photographer whenever you post the photo.

Go nuts. Have fun. Experiment. And feel free to share your success stories in the comments. (Bonus if you include a link to your AWESOME new author photo.)

Note: In the interest of full disclosure, this article was originally posted on my website.
However, since your face is part of your brand, and brand recognition is VERY important, I felt the need to share it here also.

Her face was radiant and shone brightly, but that wasn’t the only change. As she set back on her feet I realized that I was slumped to the floor and she was kneeling before me, covered in the black ichor that was demon blood. Her short dark hair now tumbled to her waist in golden waves, and her big brown eyes, shown brighter than the clearest topaz in our treasury. Her face and everything else was the same, or at least I thought so. Rubbing my gritty eyes, I looked again for the trace outline of wings undulating and shimmering behind her back. Blinking my eyes again, they were gone and her street rat glamour was restored.

“Oh good!” she threw her arms around my neck, peppering my cheek with kisses, “I thought for certain she had eaten you!”

Rubbing my aching temples, I looked at her through squinted up eyes, “What? Why would she eat me? My badassed-ness is too bitter for her!”

On the day after Corbin’s sixteenth birthday, Father gave him a new apple and a crust of hard bread, handed him his dead mother’s sword, and sent him north to Beastly Manor.

“You knew this day would come,” Father said, kissing Corbin on one cheek, and then the other, while Corbin’s golden-haired sisters hung in the doorway and cried. “It’s a pact I cannot break. For the sake of your sister, you must go.”

Corbin nodded. He was too old to cry, and the sword had been his best companion for the last decade.

“I’m ready, Father,” he said. He hesitated, then gave his father one last, hard hug. “I’m more than ready. I’ll bring you his head, and free Belle from your bargain.”

Father was too old to cry, also. But he wiped tears from his face as he nodded.

“Good lad,” he sad, turning and ushering Corbin’s sisters back into the family cottage. “God go with you.”

He holds me tight, his breath tickling my skin and his teeth on my neck. I’m trapped beneath him, one hand in his hair and the other grasping at his shirt because there is nowhere else I can put them, and there is no place I would rather be. His body is hard and warm against mine, his lips rough; he moves up my neck, to my mouth, and bites, sucking on my bottom lip before kissing me properly. Finally.

I pin him closer, wanting all of this, and I feel him smile against my mouth. It only spurs me on; our actions become heated, our wants driving us over the edge and bringing us so close… so close…

Then he moves, and leans back to hover over me. He keeps his face just a couple of inches above me, teasing me. “What?” I murmur.

“Wake up, Snow,” he whispers, a dangerous gleam in his eyes. It scares me. “And run.”

Her soul nearly stripped of brilliance, she sinks to the ground. I hover over her, life-giving energy coursing through my body. I can live forever. The fear of fading away, of being lost to the universe is wiped away. Despair of reaching the end vanishes. The drunks, the blackened spirits, can sustain me, but pure souls can make me immortal. The woman’s eyes fill with life. Her soul flickers, regaining a bit of its light. My eyes lock on her as I step away. Her soul can regain what I’ve taken. Good deeds will add to its brightness — I’ve seen our kind save people from darkness. She may replace enough light to save herself from the burning, it’s possible. But now her soul is tainted.

My gaze sweeps the landscape. Small shops. Restaurants. A bicyclist whizzes along the sidewalk. Waving new leaves, trees line a street that minute by minute holds more cars.

My hunger growls. My body trembles with newfound excitement.

The hunt beckons.

I can survive. The easy targets will always be there, always giving up whatever light they have left. After tasting the pure light, I want more. I turn my back on the streets of addiction, of darkness and face the light. A challenge. Someone to feed me, to keep me whole for a long time, allowing the hunt to continue. That individual will be hard to push into the dark, for the truly good, the ones with power enough to help me along the path to eternal life will have no blackness.

From the shadows, I stalk the humans, gazing into their souls. The sun takes its final leap up into the sky. A group of trees throw long shadows across the grass. Moving silently through the trunks, I creep through the beams of light. My face remains in shadow. My tattered clothes hang loosely from my weak, pathetic frame, but I am strong. I was banished, left here to turn to dust and have found a way to survive.

How many others discovered the secret? How many others roam the world searching, hunting for the light? Those among the stars sing and give praise, never knowing what evil they have set loose on the world.

The Wolf.

Project REUTSway PSA: If you weren’t chosen for this week’s Top Looks, don’t worry! You’re still in the running for the final anthology, provided your story met all of the posted submission guidelines. Likewise, if you were chosen for the TL this week, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be a finalist overall.

Keep creating! Keep writing! As they say, it’s still anyone’s game!

What is spiREUTS, you ask? Our fantastic Twitter followers dubbed the creation of writer/REUTS related cocktails as spiREUTS, an insanely clever play on the REUTS name and “spirits”. Birthed from this moniker, REUTS author Drew Hayes took it upon himself to create four author inspired cocktails (which he had the unfortunate task of tasting along the way).

For your viewing and tasting pleasure, we’d like to feature those four cocktails so you, too, can take your taste buds on the magical journey of creating (and slaving) over a manuscript. You NaNoWriMo participants know what I’m talking about.

FAQ from Last Week’s Challenge:

Q: How many short stories am I allowed to contribute per challenge/week?

A: Three.

Q: How will I know if you received my submission?

A: The Project REUTSway Team will send a confirmation email upon receipt, but this is not automatic (it’s written by a human being) so please give it 24 hours before you resend.

Q: Can I submit a story that I wrote a year ago and just send in the first 2,000 – 5,000 words, even if my story doesn’t fit the challenge parameters?

A: No.

Q: Do I absolutely HAVE to follow the submission guidelines to the letter, in order to be considered as a finalist?

A: YES. (Think of it this way. This is a contest, but the end result is potential publication. If you want us to take you seriously as an author/future client, you should probably take our guidelines seriously. Just saying.)
